A door to learning open to the world ~The challenge of Chiba Institute of Technology x ASU ~

In spring 2025, an interview with Julia Rosen, Vice President of Arizona State University (ASU), was held at the Chiba Institute of Technology Tokyo Skytree Town® campus. ASU is known as "the most innovative university in the United States" and is a university that actively tackles global issues. In this conversation, they discussed the significance of the new collaboration between Chiba Institute of Technology and ASU and what possibilities this collaboration will bring to students.

◇At the core of global collaboration
At the beginning, Julia said, "Chiba Institute of Technology is a highly regarded technology university that is attracting international attention. I am honored that this wonderful partnership has been born." ASU is collaborating with universities around the world to expand its global network, and the collaboration with Chiba Institute of Technology is particularly strategic and comprehensive.

◇A new form of learning that spreads to students
This collaboration will allow Chiba Institute of Technology students to access ASU's international curriculum. Rather than simply importing the curriculum, ASU's educational content will be optimized for Japanese students and provided in a localized form. "We will also have guest lectures by ASU professors and joint research in the fields of space and semiconductors. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a one-week intensive program," says Julia.

◇Innovative education using technology
ASU is also attracting attention for its innovation in education using technology. In collaboration with Hollywood creators, it has developed "Dreamscape Learning," an immersive learning method using VR. The online course incorporates more than 200 technologies and is designed to allow everyone, including introverted students, to learn actively. "Sometimes, online classes can lead to higher student participation and deeper learning than face-to-face classes," says Julia.

◇Thoughts on developing global human resources
At ASU, we do not just teach English, but also focus on intercultural understanding and building global networks. We offer a variety of growth opportunities, including international student clubs, volunteer activities, and entrepreneurial support programs. "Learning English, taking on leadership roles, and cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit are the keys to opening up the future," Julia said forcefully.

◇Instilling entrepreneurial spirit in all students
One of ASU's features is the "permeation of entrepreneurial spirit into all academic fields." Not only engineers and business people, but also artists, nurses, and physicists receive entrepreneurial education and develop the ability to tackle social issues. This collaboration with Chiba Institute of Technology is also expected to foster this mindset.

◇A university that grows with the community
ASU has worked with the local city of Phoenix to generate more than $1 billion in economic activity annually through the urban regeneration project "Skysong." This is a system that gives back the university's knowledge to the community and supports companies and startups. This experience is also expected to be utilized in the partnership with Chiba Institute of Technology.

◇Partnership based on a long-term vision
Julia positions this collaboration with Chiba Institute of Technology as "not a short-term project, but a strategic partnership that will last for decades." Multi-layered cooperation is planned, including joint research in fields such as space, semiconductors, and sustainability, student and faculty exchanges, and the development of double degree programs.

◇Message to Japanese students
Finally, Julia made the following appeal to Japanese students:
"Grades alone are not enough. Learn English, hone your leadership skills, and try various experiences. I want you to strive to surpass your limits while you are still young so that you can play an active role on the world stage."

The future is visible from Skytree Town. The challenges of Chiba Institute of Technology and ASU are sure to open up new possibilities for students who are about to take flight into the world.
